When a tooth is too damaged for a filling but does not need extraction, a dental crown is typically the right solution. At Aster Dental Centre in Edmonton, Dr. Khushali Bhanushali, DDS, place crowns that protect broken, cracked, and heavily decayed teeth, and bridges that replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the adjacent teeth on each side. The practice is located at 1265 Aster Blvd and serves patients across Tamarack, Crystallina Nera, and SE Edmonton.
A crown is typically recommended when a tooth has lost more than 50% of its structure due to decay, fracture, or an old large filling that has failed. It is also placed routinely after root canal therapy, because a tooth treated with a root canal becomes brittle and is at high risk of fracture without full-coverage protection.
At Aster Dental Centre, Dr. Bhanushali uses intraoral camera images to show you exactly what is happening before recommending a crown. In our experience, patients who can see the crack or the failing filling themselves feel much more confident moving forward with treatment. We do not recommend crowns when a high-quality filling will do the job.
Aster Dental Centre uses porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns depending on the location of the tooth and patient preference. Zirconia crowns are the most durable option, often lasting 15 to 25 years with good oral hygiene, and are particularly well-suited to back molars that absorb high biting forces. Porcelain and e-max crowns offer excellent aesthetics for visible front teeth.
All crown materials are shade-matched to your surrounding teeth using a colour guide so the restoration blends naturally. The final colour, shape, and contour are reviewed with you before the permanent crown is cemented.
Most crown and bridge procedures at Aster Dental Centre take two appointments scheduled 2 to 3 weeks apart. At the first visit, the tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent restoration is fabricated at the dental lab. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, the fit and colour are checked, and the permanent crown is bonded into place.
For bridge cases, the process is similar but involves preparing the two anchor teeth (abutments) and fabricating a three-unit or longer bridge that spans the gap. Most patients report the temporary phase as comfortable, with mild sensitivity that resolves once the permanent crown is seated.
Dental crowns at Aster Dental Centre in Edmonton range from $1,100 to $2,200 CAD per tooth, depending on the material and complexity. Most Canadian dental plans, including Manulife, Sun Life, and Green Shield Canada, cover 50% of major restorative work after the annual deductible. The practice direct-bills all major insurers and will run a predetermination request for you before the procedure so you know your out-of-pocket cost in advance.
For patients without insurance, 0% financing is available to spread the cost. The team will provide a written cost estimate at your consultation.
